The primary purpose for the book of Lamentations is to share with you and me, the reader of this book, how those who experienced that death and destruction and devastation felt as they were going through this time of God's judgment. But before we go any further, we need to be very clear about a biblical truth. Now, although God used the Babylonians, and if we read carefully, the book of Jeremiah, not just the Babylonians, but there were other nations around Judah that joined with Babylon in order to take advantage of this time, and they did not do so out of obedience to God.
