A Prayer for Peace in Your Home Today
By Christine F. Perry
Bible Reading:
“But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” - Joshua 24:15 NKJV

What you believe determines how you behave. My dad emphasized this over and over in our household. For example, if you don’t believe God loves you for who you are, you will strive to earn people’s love. If you believe wealth comes through your hands, you will always be working to gain more. If you believe this world is all there is, you will never live to build God’s kingdom, in which many of your rewards will be in heaven and not on earth.
When everything rests on us, we very rarely have moments of peace unless everything is smooth sailing — how often does that happen? But the two questions we need to ask ourselves today are, “Who am I choosing to serve?" And "Do I believe God’s way is better than my own?” Because when we choose ourselves and our desires over God’s, chaos ensues. When we believe our way is better than God’s, we are responsible for everything that happens, and fear and anxiety choke out our peace.
Peace in our hearts and homes comes through surrendering the authority and headship of our lives to the Lord. We may have said he is the savior for our eternity, but are we living today as though he is in charge?
I want to close by sharing a quote by C.S. Lewis from his book Mere Christianity:
“What Satan put into the heads of our remote ancestors was the idea that they could 'be like gods' - could set up on their own as if they had created themselves - be their own masters - invent some sort of happiness for themselves outside God, apart from God. And out of that hopeless attempt has come nearly all that we call human history - money, poverty, ambition, war, prostitution, classes, empires, slavery - the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy. The reason why it can never succeed is this. God made us: invented us as a man invents a machine. A car is made to run on petrol, and it would not run properly on anything else. Now God designed the human race to run on Himself. He Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about religion. God cannot give us happiness and peace apart from Himself, because it is not there. There is no such thing.”
Let's Pray:
Dear Father,
Please forgive us for seeking our own way above You. Help us to choose today to serve You no matter the cost, knowing that we can only ever be happy in You because You made us for You and for Your kingdom. Lord, please help us to be humble. To admit when we are wrong. To apologize and seek our loved ones' best interests over our own. To love deeply and fearlessly. To give generously and to serve from a grateful heart, knowing that in You we have everything we need for life and godliness. Lord, please rule and reign in our hearts and in our homes today. Help us to spend time with You so that we can love as You love, serve as You serve, and live as You lived. We love you. Thank You for always being our example and our guide. We know apart from You, we can do nothing, but with You, we can do all things! Amen.
